National Association of Realtors reports approximately 11,300 people were victimized in the real estate and rental sector by wire fraud in 2018 with losses totaling more than $150 million.

So far in 2020, wire fraud has increased by 13% and accounted for over $220 million in schemes according to the FBI. On the front lines of real estate transactions, title companies are particularly aware of this issue and are taking steps to counter these costly schemes. Angie Elis is a commercial title agent with City Title & Closing and a licensed Arkansas attorney. She has practiced in the real estate sector for 17 years with much of her career concentrated on title insurance. Prior to her work with City Title, Angie acted as a closing agent handling both residential and commercial transactions. She specialized as a foreclosure and bankruptcy litigation attorney for much of her early career before moving over to the closing side of the industry.
